A. Namaste. This question was briefly addressed in the post on Reiki. The chakras are bio-energetic "organs" within the human body. If they were closed there would be no flow of prana (life energy). To say that the chakras are closed is to misunderstand what they are. Would you be alive if your lungs were closed? And what if your liver were closed?
Maha Yoga as taught through this ashram does not focus on the sceince of energetic workings of the body. We approach the Kundalini process as one of consciousness and do not focus on the physical properties of chakras. Each major chakra does correspond to certain levels of consciousness but what is important is addressing that consciousness, not focusing on their physical manifestations. For those very interested in this complex science there are volumes of information available both ancient and modern. A good modern "introductory" text might be The Hidden Mysteries of Kundalini by Sri Rudrabhayananda. This, however, is irrelevant to the teachings shared here.
Most often the teachings of "opening chakras" come from a very westernized new age misunderstanding of the Kundalini process. Kundalini, once awakened, is conceptualized as moving through the chakras but the "opening" is related to bio-energetic structures called granthi (knots), not chakras. The granthi, again, in Maha Yoga is only a conceptualization for certain achievements in the evolution of consciousness.
A lifetime could be spent learning about chakras, granthis, nadis, and other theoretical energy systems but that knowledge has little to do with the actual process of self-realization. A seeker does not need to concern herself with these things. When looking at texts regarding human consciousness such as Bhagavad Gita or Tripura Rahasya one will find that these chakras are not a major teaching. Just as one could lose weight without any knowledge of the role of adenosine triphosphate in metabolism so can one achieve realization without focus on chakras.
