A. Namaste. There is a distinction that must be made between the requirement of celibacy and living a life of example. Most traditions of sannyas strictly require the renunciation of sexual interaction. Most notably, this is the case in the dasnami sannyas of Adi Shankaracharya and the Vaishnava orders of sannyas. These are other, smaller, orders that do not place the same emphasis on celibacy and a rare few that encourage sexual relations. These orders are often tantric Shivite or Shakta orders or neo-sannyas movements such as that of OSHO. What is most important to note, though, is that every order regardless of position on celibacy puts absolute emphasis on TRUTH. The ultimate is referred to as sat-chit-ananda, that is truth-consciousness-bliss. There is no place in realization or in any form of sannyas for deception. If one claims to have taken vows in a celibate order and preachers brahmacharya it is expected that one will live by that example. Anything less in an offence to the tradition and, ultimately, to the knowledge of Brahman.
Regarding the "recent events" you are asking about, the only issue which should be of concern is the issue of deception. Wearing the saffron robes of a celibate order while engaging in sexual activity and then preaching Brahmacharya for sadhakas is certainly unacceptable not because two human beings have made the decision to be intimate but because it defies the ultimate spiritual law which is TRUTH. The media has created a sensationalist buzz surrounding the sexuality of the incident and this has incited riots. Rioting and violence are also unacceptable. We must acknowledge the situation for what it is, but reacting with malice and dwelling in anger are attachments that prevent our own progress. Shakti creates the storylines which are essential for jivatma to achieve realization. She will teach those who must be taught. We do not need to lend our consciousness and judgements to her actions.
A similar question was asked in regards to the policy of Sannyas and celibacy in this ashram. Sannyas as practiced here does not strictly carry a vow of celibacy. The vow of sannyas here is to live free from desire. Most often this takes the form of celibacy. Promiscuity or dishonesty are certainly not acceptable. This is not a dasnami path, however sannyasins are held to the highest moral standards.
