A. Namaste. Reiki in it's purest form is not contradictory to Maha Yoga practice. Many modern teachings and practices associated with Reiki, however, can be detrimental to a seeker experiencing the Kundalini journey. The practice of Usui Shiki Ryoho as taught by Takata Sensei and even more so the Usui/Tibetan teachings are very heavily grounded in duality. The near-worship of symbols and the idea that at individual is somehow attuned to an outside universal energy does not correlate with the teachings of Maha Yoga. Focusing on those philosophies can hold a seeker back from progress on this path. Even more unhelpful is the tendancy of many who are experiencing awakening without the guidance of a teacher familiar with the path to seek out Reiki healers and the fact that many Reiki practitioners will self-proclaim as spiritual masters and given false insight or attempt to manipulate Kundalini using the limited teachings of Reiki. Anybody can be passed a wrench but it doesn't mean you should let them work on your BMW. Holding a tool does not qualify one as a mechanic. A Reiki practitioner, or any other practitioner for that matter, cannot assist with the Kundalini process through energy manipulation. The process is only helped through Grace and surrender.
Reiki in it's original form as taught by Usui Sensei arose out of a non-dual experience. It was taught as an art of spiritual evolution and healing was understood to be a side-effect (nearly identical to how the siddhi of healing is understood in Maha Yoga). To become a teacher took many years of training, practice, and meditation and the title was not passed around lightly. As an example of the difference in teachings, Western Reiki teaches a series of hand positions which are manipulated by the practitioner. In Japanese schools the practitioner is instead taught to still the mind and allow the hands to be guided by the energy without attachment to action. This is very much like the spiritual practices of Maha Yoga.
There is also much talk within the internet spiritual community about "Kundalini Reiki", "Shaktipat Reiki", and countless other spiritual terms with -Reiki tacked on as a suffix. These forms of "Reiki" almost always have nothing to do with their namesakes. Kundalini Reiki teachers, for example, often say that their teachings will open your chakras. What does that mean? If your chakras were not functioning you would be dead. These teachings are not harmful, but they can be misleading to those genuinely seeking assistance with a Kundalini experience.
The Maha Yoga Cyber Ashram is non-dogmatic so there is no rule against the practice of Reiki. Often, however, as progress is made on the path, attachment to the Reiki teachings and practices will fall away. Surely healing and energy do exist in realization, however the understanding of their function becomes such that there is no longer a need for those prior teachings.
